By now, it seems quite likely that the world is at the eve of a new trade war. We witness new blanket tariff announcements and retaliations almost daily now. But reciprocal tariffs, taxes on digital services, new customs duties on steel and aluminum and various challenges in the WTO dispute settlement body (the DSB) also raise uncertainty.
In the meantime, the European Union has concluded an FTA and an investment agreement with Singapore and Vietnam, an FTA with Thailand is just around the corner, and a first-of-its-kind Digital FTA ('EUSDTA') with Singapore has been agreed upon. All this is going on while the largest 'Mega FTAs', the RCEP (which includes AFTA, China and many others) and the CPTPP (which includes several of Cambodia's key trade partners such as Japan, Malaysia, Singapore and Vietnam) are just getting up to speed.
Are these FTAs still useful in a trade war context?
