More support for e-commerce companies and small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) is on the way after the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Ministry of Economy and Finance teamed up to offer a business training programme and a small grants programme for the two sectors.

According to local media, incubation programs and digital transformation programmes will be key components of the new project.

Financial capacities will be improved and networking opportunities will allow companies to take advantage of increased opportunities.

Federation of Association for Small and Medium Enterprises of Cambodia (Fasmec) president Te Taing Por said the association is still limited in its technological capacity. New technology must be implemented to facilitate business communication and online tax collection, he said.

“Therefore, the use of electronic systems is very important and a new catalyst to promote better business competition,” he added.

The UNDP has worked with the government in the past on e-commerce and a common goal is to create more than 1,000 jobs by 2022.

The Ministry of Commerce is currently working on an e-commerce marketplace called Go4eCam which is expected to be completed in July.

The marketplace is expected to increase economic opportunities for SMEs in Cambodia and help them participate in the digital economy.

It will focus on digitalising micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and supporting SMEs that operate in the provinces and those owned by women.

The e-commerce platform will feature product listings, order systems, payment systems and shipping services, along with integrated services including payment service providers and logistics providers.
