Secretary of State of the Secretariat of Civil Aviation of Cambodia Sin Chansereyvutha has announced that the new international airport in Siem Reap is now 42 percent complete.
The minister shared the update via National Radio of Cambodia (RNK), stressing that a great deal of progress had been made despite the COVID-19 pandemic.
Siem Reap New International Airport is set to replace the existing, much smaller Siem Reap Airport. The site is located 50 kilometres from the existing facility, with the aim not only to increase capacity, but also to protect the World Heritage Site, that includes the tourist mecca of Angkor Wat.
The new project was planned for completion over three phases, with part one raising the current capacity from 5 million passengers per year to 7 million. This is scheduled to increase to 10 million by 2030 and 20 million by 2050.
The $880 million project, undertaken by Chinese owned Angkor International Airport Investment (Cambodia) Co Ltd has now completed the construction of the airport buildings, the aircraft landing strip and key operation facilities.
The Chinese firm has exclusive rights to run and manage the airport concession for 55 years under a build-operate-transfer scheme.
Siem Reap is currently the second busiest airport in the Kingdom after Phnom Penh and it is hoped the new airport will contribute to attracting more tourists to Siem Reap province, thus boosting economic growth and employment opportunities in the area.
Construction of the 700 hectare Siem Reap Angkor International Airport began on March 15, 2020. The airport is scheduled for completion by 2023.
